Try to free your mind of conventional parenting ideas for a minute and ask yourself a question: is there really such a thing as "child abuse"?
Everything that an abusive home heaps on a child, the destruction of self-esteem, the violence, the despair, all of it will come when that child is let loose in the world as an adult. Basically, you are rearing a child in captivity without mimicking the outside world at all, so you raise this child unprepared for what will come.
The advantages of an abusive home:
By defining coddling and over-protection as "good parenting" you have raised a bunch of kids with no natural immunity to slings and arrows of real life. Pussies.

The advantages of an abusive home:
- High pain threshold. If you are raised with kicks and punches then it's nothing when you face them as an adult.
- Thick skin. People who get verbally abused as children learn to live with being insulted, they develop emotional skills to protect themselves.
- You are not surprised when life turns out like shit. It's what you have always known so it doesn't sting as badly.
